We Take Snagging Very Seriously… and Snag Your Home as if it Were Our Own

Building a home is a significant investment.

You deserve the highest standard in workmanship and quality.

But mistakes happen, builders rush projects, and tradespeople often take shortcuts.

Their mistakes can cost you thousands.

That's where snagging comes in.

At Best Snag Scotland we snag your home as if it were our own.

Here’s why:

My Name is Ian Thomson. I’m the founder of Best Snag Scotland.

I’ve experienced poor workmanship – and the heartache it can bring – firsthand.

When I was 6 years old my parents bought a new home...

They scrimped, sacrificed, and saved for many years to achieve their goal of home ownership. And because it was the biggest investment of their life, it should have been a wonderful, happy, and exciting experience.

But it wasn't.

I still vividly remember the frustration and arguments my mum had with the builder. There was no such thing as a professional snagger back then. So my mum was finding all the issues herself.

She fought tooth and nail to get issues resolved. Sometimes she succeeded. Other times she had to concede failure and live with the constant visual reminder that her home wasn’t built to the standards promised when she bought the house.

This experience made a deep impression on my young mind and stuck with me as I later went into the building trade.

I still vividly remember the frustration and arguments my mum had with the builder. There was no such thing as a professional snagger back then. So my mum was finding all the issues herself.

She went back and forth on issues on a weekly basis.

The builder tried to argue that most of the defects were fine.

But my mum wouldn't have it.

At 23 Years Of Age, I Became One Of The Youngest Chartered Building Surveyors In Scotland.

After gaining a first class honours Degree in Building Surveying and working with one of Scotlands leading building surveying and project management practices, I was awarded Chartered Building Surveying status by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) following a strict assessment procedure. This is the most highly sought after and respected qualification in the snagging and surveying profession.

I then moved into home building as a site manager and have since built over 100 new build homes in Scotland.

Seeing the building industry has given me unique insights that give me an edge as a snagger.

You’ve probably seen the dozens of news reports showing the horror stories many families experience with their new home. Here are some of the reasons why mistakes happen:

  • Some builders simply attempt to build too many homes on the one plot of land in a single calendar year. And when they do, focus is often just on production which can compromise quality and customer satisfaction
  • Pricework - Subcontractors generally get paid per job, not per hour. This leads them to focus on getting the job done as quickly as possible, so shortcuts are taken.
  • Because tradespeople are paid per job, they’re generally not incentivised to train apprentices as they have to take time away from pricework. This leads to the caliber of future tradespeople dropping, which has an impact on quality.
  • Site managers should be snagging homes as they are built. However, due to lack of resources and tight timeframes, they often don’t have the time to snag them to the standard they would like to.

Is it any wonder thousands of homes are being built below acceptable standards – with as many as 100 and sometimes 500 or more snags?

Is it any wonder customers are not getting the quality build they should expect considering the huge mortgages they are paying?
